Education Abroad in the age of Covid-19

October 28, 2021 | 11 A.M.
Zoom ID: 990 1194 7122

The USI Global Studies Program and the Department of World Languages and Cultures are pleased to announce the first presentation in our fall line-up of the Global Salon Series. Ms. Melissa Gonnerman, Associate Director of the Center for International Programs will be presenting “Education abroad in the age of COVID-19: What changed and what remains the same?” at 11am CST on Thursday, October 28. This is a virtual event and a great opportunity for students to learn about study abroad.

COVID-19 has impacted all sectors, but it hit international education particularly hard. When the pandemic began, USI students who were studying abroad were asked to return home and international students at USI had to decide whether to return home or remain here, far from family. USI halted all study abroad Summer 2020 through Spring 2021. Some international students who were studying abroad at USI had difficulty returning home and others who returned home at the start of the pandemic had difficulty returning due to closed borders.

With vaccines being distributed and a better understanding of how to avoid and treat COVID-19, USI is once again allowing study abroad on a case-by-case basis. Does that mean study abroad is the same as pre-pandemic? The answer is no. Many things have changed: the application process, eligibility, locations available, ability to travel once on site, and many more. In this session, I will given an overview of how study abroad has changed due to COVID-19 and how USI students can pursue study and intern abroad opportunities going forward.

The public can attend by using the provided Zoom Webinar ID. These virtual presentations will also be live-streamed to the USI College of Liberal Arts Facebook page and recorded.
